Aston Martin revealed DP-100 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2014. Although physically only an exterior mock-up it was a fully designed car designed to race within the Gran Turismo 6 racing game on the Sony Playstation 3 console.
Vision Gran Turismo is a 15th anniversary celebration with cars designed by Aston martin, BMW, Lamborghini and around 30 other manufacturers.
The project started with a question from Kazunori Yamauchi: "Would you be willing to design your rendition of Gran Turismo for us?" The videogame’s name "Gran Turismo" (GT) refers to a 2-door sport car, known as a Grand Touring car in the automotive world. The manufacturers who have answered our call are now delivering new Grand Touring cars in succession. “Vision Gran Turismo” is a 15th anniversary celebration that will be hosted by Gran Turismo, car manufacturers and users around the globe. The cars presented will appear one after another in Gran Turismo 6, and as those cars will be driven by more and more people, the festival will get bigger and bigger.
To quote from Aston Martin's press information:
The Aston Martin DP-100 is a stunning new addition to Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) Sony PlayStation 3 game. Developed by the Aston Martin design team, DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo is a new, virtual-only GT racer available for Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) owners to download from July 2014, following its global launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The twin-turbo mid-engined racer offers up to 800bhp, endowing it with blistering performance fully in keeping with the high octane nature of the game.
Created using many of the same techniques as applied in the development of Aston Martin production sports cars, such as hand sketches and 3D modelling, followed by full realisation in the virtual world, DP-100 provides an exceptional level of detail with a fully functioning suspension system and state-of-the-art electronics.
Design Director Marek Reichman: "DP-100 has been an exciting and intensive project for the team here at Gaydon.
"Features such as the car's revolutionary 'active aerodynamics' are there not just as a way of enhancing form, but also to support the car's function in-game."
Starting with nothing but the traditional 'blank sheet of paper' the Aston Martin design team and design engineers worked for six months to create the new addition to the Vision Gran Turismo stable of race cars. Clearly pushing the boundaries of what an Aston Martin could be, DP-100 not only looks beautiful but also boasts a high degree of engineering integrity.
As with the CC100 Speedster Concept, many of the design cues visible in DP-100, such as the light blade rear lamps, could also feed through into future Aston Martin sports cars launched in the offline world.
DP-100 was unveiled to the world at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the company of Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo and President of Polyphony Digital.
